Prescription Drug Company Advertising - Beneficial or Harmful?

We can’t miss the endless amount of commercials for prescription drugs when watching television. There seems to be an advertisement running for some drug during every commercial break.  In the 1980’s, prescription drug companies started direct-to-consumer advertising, instead of just advertising through doctors.  According to ProCon.org, for every advertising dollar spent, the drug company “increases retail sales by $4.20.”

Remember Watson?  He is the IBM supercomputer which debuted on Jeopardy in 2011 and put us meager humans in our place intellectually (or so he thinks).  Watson was the result of IBM’s $6 Billion commitment to research that began in 2006.  The project was called “Deep QA” and was a collaborative effort between IBM and leading universities.

The nurses entering the work force today are tomorrow’s nurse leaders.  Yet, traditional nursing schools do not always train nurses for leadership roles.  Today’s leaders need to mentor and coach these upcoming Millennial nurses.
