Germs Being Spread Through Healthcare Uniforms
05 Nov

It seems today that everywhere we go; whether it is the grocery store, movie theatre, restaurant, doctor’s office or the mall, we are seeing sterile cleanser dispensers all over the place.  Fighting the spread of germs is on everyone’s mind these days and doing whatever we can to combat this battle is the main game plan.  In fact, I am willing to bet that many of us carry a small personal size sterile cleanser in our briefcase, purse or car.  Bottom line - we are willing to take steps to stop the spread of germs.  So if this is the case, why do we not think the same way when it comes to lea

Today when visiting healthcare facilities, whether acute or non-acute, the question of branding always comes up during discussion when developing a uniform program.  Common questions include:

I have been involved in a number of conversations about the connection of healthcare employee apparel and the function they serve in the continuum of care. Most of these conversations centered on the patient. The Patient’s Experience - being able to recognize the difference in medical staff and support service staff. Several months ago while my son was preparing dinner for our family, he cut his finger pretty bad which required a trip to our local emergency room for stitches.  Instead of going to the emergency room at Lehigh Valley Medical Center, we opted to go to Westfield Hospital as it was closer and we knew we would be seen quicker than at the regional hospital.

Enclothed Cognition and Chest Pumping
02 Jul

I had a big marketing presentation to give last week.  To prepare, I pumped out my chest and wore a white lab coat.  Ok, just kidding I didn’t… but maybe I should have.  Certain actions (e.g., chest pumping) make people act more confident.  This is called ‘embodied cognition’.  It’s also been determined certain clothes influence performance.  Researchers Adam Galinsky and Hajo Adam from Northwestern University have dubbed this dress-for-success theory as "enclothed cognition".

Recent studies show that over the next five to seven years, acute healthcare opportunities will grow at steady rates but with no major increases anticipated. However, the non-acute market is expected to boom, with growth rates in double digits -- expected to be at least 12 to 15 percent. With changes in the national healthcare policy landscape, acute facilities are pushing their customers to non-acute facilities in an effort to free up valuable space and trim costs.
