TBT: Disinfecting options for healthcare laundry
18 Feb

The last time you were in a hospital or a clinic, whether it be for an overnight procedure, same day procedure or just simple blood work, did you notice the curtain in your room? Was it clean? Or better yet, when was the last time it was cleaned and disinfected? How many different sets of hands have tugged and pulled on that curtain?  Have you ever thought about those little germs being transferred from curtain to curtain?

You wear & wash your scrubs where?

As it seems a new super bug is born every day, the subject of wearing and laundering scrubs outside of healthcare facilities continues to be a trending discussion now more than ever. Healthcare professionals on average work a 10 to 12 hour shift, so for some the thought of having to change into street clothes on their way out of work is just inconvenient.

Working as a uniform provider in the healthcare industry I tend to take notice any time I see an individual dressed in scrub apparel outside of my work bubble. On a recent trip to the grocery store I noticed what I presumed to be a nurse, near me in the produce aisle. While pretending to be fascinated with the tomatoes that were on sale, I examined her uniform from a distance trying to determine the brand. It seems today that everywhere we go; whether it is the grocery store, movie theatre, restaurant, doctor’s office or the mall, we are seeing sterile cleanser dispensers all over the place.  Fighting the spread of germs is on everyone’s mind these days and doing whatever we can to combat this battle is the main game plan.  In fact, I am willing to bet that many of us carry a small personal size sterile cleanser in our briefcase, purse or car.  Bottom line - we are willing to take steps to stop the spread of germs.  So if this is the case, why do we not think the same way when it comes to lea

Hand washing

Growing up as a child, I remember two important lessons constantly being reinforced at home:
• Cover your mouth when you cough
• Wash your hands before dinner

Quite honestly combining the child in me and being the rebellious type, I really thought these lessons were more of an inconvenience and not necessary for my well-being. I remember going to amusement parks, bowling alleys, playgrounds and baseball parks, coming home and being greeted by that motherly chant, “Go Wash Your Hands”.

Outpatient facilities are often a part of a large hospital or IDN. In a way, an outpatient facility is an extension of a unified health system and therefore a representation of the health system's brand and image.

Having a unified uniform program is vital to the health of an organization. However, have you ever thought about the manufacturer providing your company with uniforms?
