In 2011, historian David McCullough spoke at the National Book Festival.  The topic of America’s loss of manufacturing came up, and he said it didn’t worry him. He looked at his home town of Pittsburgh as a model of what can happen to a city when it loses manufacturing jobs. He went on to explain how cleaner businesses such as University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon, and Highmark have replaced the dirty steel industry.
