If you were to describe what the average doctor looked like, you would say someone wearing a white coat with possibly a stethoscope around their neck or an Rx pad in their pocket. To most people, the white lab coat is a timeless garment that identifies a doctor immediately. Although this coat is used almost universally to identify a doctor, not many people know where the concept came from.

In meeting with one of my laundry customers the other day, a hot topic was brought up in regards to a recent push from the Health Department to hospitals around the country - “Bare Below the Elbows”. Imagine if you were being wheeled into surgery and just as they go to give you anesthesia, the surgeon walks in wearing a black topcoat. While that would seem awkward to us today, that was the typical apparel for physicians prior to the late 19th century. Physicians wore all black as it was considered proper attire - suitable for patient interactions that were thought of as serious and a formal matter. The dark topcoats did nothing to rid physicians of their link to death - as a visit to a physician prior to the late 19th century rarely benefited the patient.
