2016 - The Year of Changes
09 Mar

How many times have we heard that with a new year, comes many changes? Well you better buckle up because 2016 is going to be a fun year with many changes. In fact, many of these changes have already started last year. Changes that will impact both our personal lives and the way we do business.

TBT: Disinfecting options for healthcare laundry
18 Feb

The last time you were in a hospital or a clinic, whether it be for an overnight procedure, same day procedure or just simple blood work, did you notice the curtain in your room? Was it clean? Or better yet, when was the last time it was cleaned and disinfected? How many different sets of hands have tugged and pulled on that curtain?  Have you ever thought about those little germs being transferred from curtain to curtain?

Earlier this week the International Association for Healthcare Textile Management (IAHTM) hosted their Annual Member Meeting and Education Conference in our own backyard of Clearwater, Florida. I was lucky enough to sneak away from the office for a bit to attend the panel discussion “Where is Our Industry Going? (Textiles, Equipment and Chemicals)” featuring Norbert Gittard, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Jensen USA, Jason Lang, Director of RD&E for Ecolab and our very own President, Alan Schwartz.

When I first entered the laundry business years ago, one of the first and probably most important lessons I learned from my father-in-law Max Stettner at Penn Linen & Uniform Service, was to have a contingency plan in place. Unfortunately not owning a crystal ball, we do not have the luxury of knowing in advance when a natural disaster might strike or worse yet when our machinery may break down. A contingency plan is the key to successful operations as it will ensure you can still deliver your products in a timely manner even when things take a turn for the worst.

Last week while doing some belated spring cleaning, I had a bunch of stuff to take to the local recycling center. When I hopped into my son’s jeep that has been sitting idle on the street the last few months, the car would not start.  I immediately needed to resort to my contingency or back-up plan, a spare car battery we had in our garage. Upon replacing the battery, I loaded the jeep and off I went.

Does your current supplier have a proven Plan B?

Recently I was preparing to travel to Florida for a VIBM (“very important” business meeting) when all of a sudden a huge snow storm hit Pennsylvania, resulting in the cancellation of all flights. Upon learning my original flight was cancelled due to the pending major Nor’easter, I normally would go into panic mode, but fortunately for me I had a Plan B – a relationship with a trusted travel agent.

Laundry

Linen life, replacements and reject percentage. These three powerful phrases are so dear to the heart of the laundry owner/operators these days.  As laundries fight to win, maintain and keep business, these key factors can and will continue to play an important role in the success and failure of any given laundry.

Definition of Space:

a: a limited extent in one, two, or three dimensions :, area, volume
b: an extent set apart or available <parking space> <floor space>

This weekend instead of playing golf, I decided to tackle my garage and finally clean it out so we could use it for what it was intended for - parking our cars.  I was immediately faced with two dilemmas:
