In April 2015, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled their new five-star quality rating on the Hospital Compare website which are based on the 11 publicly reported measures in the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The intention is to make understanding the data easier for healthcare consumers.

We all are familiar with the saying “it’s not what you say, but how you say it”.  How a patient hears news about their prognosis is vital to making sure they have a clear understanding of their treatment plan and helps to promote trust.  Hospitals cannot improve their HCAHPS scores if they cannot improve communication skills between patients and their providers.

A woman, we’ll call Hilda, dials 911. When the paramedics arrive, they decide she needs to be taken to the hospital.  The neighbor helps find her driver’s license and social security card for admitting records.  Hilda isn’t able to speak any more when she arrives at the hospital.  After being admitted as a “Jane Doe”, her husband and neighbor arrive at the hospital.

I was recently reading through PatientExperience.com, and I came across two articles highlighting a report developed by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) on the patient experience in healthcare. According to PwC – the healthcare consumer’s “personal experience is the number one reason for choosing a doctor or hospital”. It may be intuitive that someone would not make a price decision when their health is at stake, but PwC‘s study indicates that “healthcare is the ONLY industry where patient experience trumps price”.
