When you think of the people who care for you during a stay at a hospital it is often doctors and nurses that come to mind. However, there is a different form of comfort that can be given by a unique visitor that you may see walking the halls next time you visit a healthcare facility. Therapy dogs are becoming increasingly popular among acute facilities, nursing homes and hospices. Since the end of World War II, the use of therapy dogs has been considered a value-added approach to improve the spirits of patients and their experience.

I was recently reading through PatientExperience.com, and I came across two articles highlighting a report developed by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) on the patient experience in healthcare. According to PwC – the healthcare consumer’s “personal experience is the number one reason for choosing a doctor or hospital”. It may be intuitive that someone would not make a price decision when their health is at stake, but PwC‘s study indicates that “healthcare is the ONLY industry where patient experience trumps price”.

Color-Coded and Branded Uniform Program from Fashion Seal Healthcare®

In April, I traveled to Chicago for the Beryl Institute’s Patient Experience Conference.  Something I do at any event is ask my fellow-conference go-ers what other conferences they’ve recently attended.  Many said the Patient Experience conference was the one and only.  For many, budget constraints limit their organizational investment to one event a year and patient experience is what they felt was the most important.  It wasn’t too surprising to learn that attendance at this particular event has grown from 200 participants in 2011 to more than 670 participants in 2014.

Non-Acute Care Doctor and Patient
20 Mar

Getting an appointment with a primary care physician at a non-acute facility has become a huge achievement these days, especially if you’re a new patient.  In Massachusetts, it takes an average of 39 days for a new patient to get an appointment with a family physician and an average of 50 days with an internal medicine physician.1   For the majority of us, that is a substantial time to wait for an appointment considering personal health is not something that should be set on the back burne

In healthcare today the “golden ring” is high ratings in patient satisfaction. Hospital patient satisfaction scores - once a well-guarded statistic – is now publicly transparent through the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

How effective are branded uniforms?

The New York Times previously reported that the healthcare industry spent more than $700 billion on advertising in 2011 and yet Chris Bevolo, author of The Marketer’s Guide to Brand Strategy, estimates that less than 20 percent of U.S. hospitals are guided by an active brand strategy.

Enhanced Lighting in Healthcare Facilities
14 Jan

Who doesn’t enjoy soft lighting? It can set the right mood, make you look 10 years younger, add romance to a dinner and quickly change the appearance of an environment.

The power of lighting is extraordinary! Studies are being done in the healthcare field which prove lighting can be an integral part in helping a patient heal more rapidly and have a better hospital experience.

Are your patients uncomfortable and overexposed?
08 Jan

Who hasn’t had a hospital visit where you felt like onlookers would learn more than just your symptoms? Patient apparel manufacturers sometimes design the apparel based on what they think a patient would want/need. What apparel experts might consider affordable fabric with easy access ties might translate into a see-through gown that exposes a patient’s backside.

HCAHPS and The Patient Experience

Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) – what a mouthful right?  Leave it to our government to add complication to the complicated world of healthcare. However, it’s here and it’s important to understand as we face the new healthcare world unfolding before us. Having basic knowledge of HCAHPS will help you understand your customer’s and prospect’s challenges.

Outpatient facilities are often a part of a large hospital or IDN. In a way, an outpatient facility is an extension of a unified health system and therefore a representation of the health system's brand and image.

Having a unified uniform program is vital to the health of an organization. However, have you ever thought about the manufacturer providing your company with uniforms?
