Health 2.0: Social media & healthcare

With advancements in technology, it is only natural that the healthcare field would take advantage of the rapid waves of communication. The phenomenon, appropriately called Health 2.0, refers to how user-generated social media platforms, such as blogs, Facebook or Twitter, are being used as a means to promote collaboration between patients and various stakeholders in the healthcare industry.

You betcha and Lee Aase, Director of Social Media at the Mayo Clinic understands how to reach this growing audience.  According to a Pew report*, 43% of Internet users 65 and older use social media, up from 13% in 2009.  I heard Aase speak at a local AMA healthcare event this past fall and he says that if he can figure out how to leverage social media as a grandpa, then anyone can.  Seriously, his slide deck includes the cutest pictures of his grandchildren to illustrate this point (and just maybe to show off a little).

Social media is making a big splash in the healthcare industry by making it easier for healthcare brands to communicate with current and potential patients.


The newest additional to the social media stream is Pinterest.  Pinterest allows you to educate, showcase and humanize your healthcare brand.  Many healthcare brands have not even tapped into the potential Pinterest offers to engage and inform your communities.
