Is Grandma using hashtags?

Grandma using Social Media - Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

You betcha and Lee Aase, Director of Social Media at the Mayo Clinic understands how to reach this growing audience.  According to a Pew report*, 43% of Internet users 65 and older use social media, up from 13% in 2009.  I heard Aase speak at a local AMA healthcare event this past fall and he says that if he can figure out how to leverage social media as a grandpa, then anyone can.  Seriously, his slide deck includes the cutest pictures of his grandchildren to illustrate this point (and just maybe to show off a little).

The Mayo Clinic’s leadership is well established among healthcare providers in adopting social media tools.  In addition to being a “pioneer in hospital blogging”, the Mayo Clinic has the most popular medical provider channel on YouTube and active Twitter and Facebook sites.  Here’s some of my favorite takeaways from Aase’s slide deck on how he made this happen... and you can too.

  1. 1. The Mayo Clinic makes videos using a Flip camera.  One of the leading healthcare facilities in the world uses a Flip.  No excuses people. Get out there and start shooting video. (Get releases before you publish, pay attention to HIPAA… but all you need is a Flip.)

  1. 2. Many of the great social media tools are FREE to use and easy to activate. for blogging, slideshare for PowerPoint, and of course YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and more.  YouTube is the world’s #2 search engine (check out our Superior Uniform Group's YouTube channel).  When calculating the ROI, the I (investment) is zero and the R (return) can be infinity.

  1. 3. A direct quote from his slide deck: “Hand-wringing about the merits and dangers of social media is about as productive as debating gravity.” Personal smartphones have made banning social media at work an ineffective long-term solution.  Another direct quote: “Professionalism is more than the absence of unprofessional conduct”.

  1. 4. Finally, tell the stories waiting to be told. Perfect is the enemy of good.  Use social media tools to share them.  Watch your community grow.  And don’t forget to give Grandma a shout-out on Twitter.
