A Millennial's Approach to Healthcare

A Millennial's Approach to Healthcare

Major retailers like Nike, Apple and Coca-Cola have all chosen to change the way they market to millennials and now healthcare providers are jumping on the band wagon as well.  This year Millennials overtook the Baby Boomers as the largest living generation, that’s a whopping 75.3 million people that will need a healthcare provider during their lifetime.  Similar to making a retail purchase, Millennials like to do their homework before choosing a healthcare provider.  But the Millennial approach to choosing a healthcare provider differs greatly from our parents.

In a recent global survey of over 3,000 people, 70 percent of Millennials selected their doctors based on referrals from family and friends, whereas only 41 percent of those over age 65 did so.  The survey also revealed that Millennials are more likely to seek out healthcare information online, with more than 54 percent reportedly doing so before even seeing a doctor.

In the survey, 60 percent of dis-satisfied Millennials patients chose to share their negative experiences with their friends.  Like restaurants, movies and other products, the healthcare industry will find itself having to adjust to the new millennial culture of digital reviews being instantly posted online.

As the Millennial generation becomes the ones caring for their grandparents and parent’s generation, there is a higher expectation on how information is received and communicated. This is where an easily identifiable uniform program becomes of great importance for both the patient and the loved ones.

How do you choose a healthcare provider?  Do you read healthcare reviews online?  Share your opinion on Millennials approach to healthcare below.
