Hand washing is the in thing to do!

Hand washing

Growing up as a child, I remember two important lessons constantly being reinforced at home:
• Cover your mouth when you cough
• Wash your hands before dinner

Quite honestly combining the child in me and being the rebellious type, I really thought these lessons were more of an inconvenience and not necessary for my well-being. I remember going to amusement parks, bowling alleys, playgrounds and baseball parks, coming home and being greeted by that motherly chant, “Go Wash Your Hands”.

Today working in the healthcare environment and traveling week in and week out, I now understand and appreciate the importance of those lessons taught to me as a child. When you travel like I do, you appreciate the value of a bar of soap and some hot water as well as an anti-microbial gel for hands from time to time. These are tools desperately needed as we are thrown into the growing battle with germs.

Think about everything you touch during your day and how many others touch and/or handled that same item. What about that door knob you handle every day? Or the handle on the shopping cart at the grocery store? But wait, it gets better. Just hop on a plane and go to the restroom, think about all the hands that touch the door handle or the food tray on the seat in front of you. Then check into your hotel and pick up the remote control that thousands of others have touched or handled before you.

Trust me, it just gets better, germs are everywhere. I am constantly washing my hands during the day. All I can say is Mom, thanks for the lessons because I can assure you as a parent, I am now passing these onto my kids.

By washing your hands, we help reduce the spread of bacteria and germs. Hand washing is the most important thing to help stop spreading germs and infection. Class dismissed!
