TBT: Nurses – The Heart of Healthcare

TBT: Nurses – The Heart of Healthcare

The importance of nurses in the healthcare field has grown leaps and bounds in recent years. While all roles are crucial in the industry, the roles of nurses have evolved to encompass MANY aspects that in the past would either be taken care of by other team members or not thought about all.

The core focus of a nurse’s role is of course the caregiver, but that in itself has grown to include being a key decision maker that must make judgement calls that used to only be made by doctors – such as implementing interventions that promote the health of a patient. Nurses also carry the weight of managing the care of patients, coordinating care with other support staff members, both clinical and non-clinical, to ensure that all needs of the patient are being met.

Beyond being the key caregiver, nurses are now also the advocate and educator for patients. Now more than ever nurses are being charged with acting as a patient advocate, protecting the rights of the patient when they are unable to do so for themselves. Nurses are the educator to patients and their families, assisting with helping them understand procedures, medications and steps that must be taken once discharged from a facility.

Nurses are also viewed as “the face” of a healthcare facility in regards to patient satisfaction. They interact the most with patients on a consistent basis, which is no doubt the result of their role evolving to encompass such aspects mentioned above and more!

Gone are the days when nurses were merely viewed as administrators of care or a doctor’s assistant. They truly are the Heart of Healthcare!
