Why Millennials Still Find Healthcare Unaffordable

Why Millennials Still Find Healthcare Unaffordable

In April, Baby Boomers passed the crown as the largest living generation to Millennials, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. There are now more Americans between the ages of 18-34 than those aged 51-69.  Millennials have an increasing influence on just about every industry out there, including Healthcare.  But why do only two-thirds of Millennials have health insurance?

In a Transamerica Center for Health Studies survey conducted by Harris Poll, affordability remains a top barrier to accessing healthcare and insurance coverage for the millennial generation. About one in five Millennials reported they can’t afford their routine healthcare expenses (down slightly from previous years). An additional 26 percent said they can afford healthcare, but with difficulty. Only about one in three Millennials said they are currently saving for healthcare expenses. Eighty percent believe health costs are too high and unpredictable and half have delayed care due to lack of money.  According to the survey, 34 percent of respondents said that any premium over $100/month is unaffordable.

Many Millennials choose healthcare alternatives such as taking over-the-counter vitamins and supplements, self-diagnose with online services like Web-MD, as well as skipping yearly wellness visits because many of them cannot afford healthcare.

Of the two thirds Millennials who are insured, a third of them obtain healthcare through their employer, 19 percent have individually purchased plans, 39 percent are on a parent’s plan, and 5 percent have health insurance policies through their university or college.

On a positive note, the percentage of uninsured Millennials has declined since 2013 from a high of 23 percent to a low of 11 percent this year.

Are the Millennials in your life insured?
